Yasser Arafat under siege

    Former Palestinian President and leader of the PLO Yasser Arafat, popularly known as Abu Ammar, salutes his people whilst under siege in the Presidential compound in Ramallah in the summer of 2003. Arafat was under siege in the compound, which is known as Al Mukaata, for over two years and could not leave until he was finally flown to a hospital in Paris in late 2004 shortly before his death. On 11th November 2004 Yasser Arafat died in Paris. His funeral in Ramallah was attended by hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.
